Hope on the Inhale

hope
on the inhale
after the gut-punch
the diagnosis, bleak prognosis
look into the mirror
but your eyes can’t focus
on any beauty but what’s lost

hope
on the inhale
in the breaking of headlines
that beat on the shoreline,
the rising of feartides
that pull you back into despair

hope
on the inhale
after the deep sigh
after the long cry
after the fists-raised-why

hope
on the inhale
after the conversation
the situation
the dissipation of dreams
hearts ripped at the seams

hope
on the inhale
on your face, on your knees
crying, dear God please,
at the bedside of the dying
at the end of all your trying
to understand
how to stand
with the wind
knocked clean out of you

hope
on the inhale
in the ocean waves of sorrow
where the aching, hollow tomorrow
crashes ceaselessly upon
the shores of your today

hope
on the inhale
hope, hope, hope
on the inhale
the broken heart is beating
hope
the weary lungs still breathing
hope
while there is life
there is light
hope
in the darkest night

hope
on the inhale
breathe out fear
and heavy regret
remember my soul
and do not forget
I am sustained by promise
that has not failed me yet

hope
on the inhale
though my way may lead
through perilous lands
I rest in the miracles
of unseen hands
and live and breathe
and have my being in
Christ, eternal hope

hope in the future
hope in the past
hope in this sacred moment
where life can be lived
fully, without fear and
without regret
hope, hope, hope
hope, hope, hope
hope

on every inhale
hope
