I lie awake
Calculating the distance
From womb to the world.
It is such a short road to travel.
You are nearly here,
Less than arms-length away
There is but the patient opening
Of one long-awaited flower
The quiet mechanics
Of one perfectly-crafted key
Turning in the lock of my body
And moving through
Blood and water ring of fire
Life and death and breath and rest
I offer up my utter surrender
To the God who knit you together
In the secret of this womb.
It is such a short road to travel.
As I, my child, deliver you
So God delivers me.
